The Ultimate Guide to Semi Permanent Make-Up

redefinedbeauty

So you know you want semi-permanent make-up but not quite sure which treatment is right for you?

Here’s our simple guide to explain everything you need to know.

What is semi-permanent makeup?

Semi-permanent involves ‘implanting’ micro pigments into the skin. You can think of it as a kind of semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo.

These treatments aim to replicate makeup, without the hassle of having to apply it every morning or retouch throughout the day.

So is it permanent?

It’s referred to as ‘semi-permanent’ makeup because over time your treatment will fade as your body brakes down the pigment in your skin.

However, for most people, it will never completely disappear.

How will it benefit me?

* Lasts up to 5 years (annual touch ups are recommended)

* Wake up made up! Extra 5 minutes in bed every morning (no brainer!)

* Smudge proof, water proof, no need for retouching throughout the day.

* Frames and enhances your face, defining your features

* Often a great anti-ageing tool e.g lifting eye area with your brow shape

* Perfect for holidays, gym sessions and in water

*Save money on cosmetics

* Help restore look for alopecia clients who have lost eyebrows or eyelashes

What are the differed treatments available?

Brows

Semi-permanent brows are without a doubt the most popular semi-permanent make up treatment. With a huge range of techniques to suit all ages and skin types, this treatment is not only a great time saver but also an amazing anti-ageing tool (giving you that extra little lift)

Microblading

Over the last 5 years microblading has become huge! Part of its popularity came from all the celebs opting for the treatment. Not to mention the fact that it’s been around in Asian countries forever! It’s a technique that aims to create/build a really natural hair stroke brow.

Using a manual hand tool like a pen with a small blade, pigment is implanted in the skin to simulate natural hair formation.

It’s great for clients who want to achieve a really soft result. Especially those who may have patchy, sparse brows or no brows at all and are nervous about having something too dramatic.

If you have oily skin this treatment isn’t for you. It also doesn’t usually last as long as some of the other brow techniques offered.

Hairstroke (using machine)

This technique can also result in a very natural result but uses a machine with a small needle instead of a manual tool. Some technicians prefer to work with this and can achieve similar results to microblading.

It still implants hair by hair resulting in a super soft, natural finish

An advantage of this technique is that it heals better on clients with oily skin.

However, over time, the hairstokes are more likely to blur and the pigment to blend which can then look less natural than microblading.

Combination

A combination brow is a slightly more defined look. It’s sill natural as it has soft edges but it uses a combination of hairstrokes (usually microblading) and light shading.

This technique is perfect for clients who are used to wearing a small amount of makeup or powder on their brows and therefore a microblading/hair stroke brow maybe too natural.

It can also be a good compromise for clients with oily skin who really want microblading, as this technique includes more machine-based work, which benefits from better healing than microblading alone.

Ombre

This is a fairly new technique in the semi-permanent makeup game but it’s hugely popular. For those who wear a full face of make up, its how many would try to do their brows every day.

It’s a shaded technique using a machine. Ombre brows should have a defined arch and tail and a soft airy front. These brows heal really well on all skin types and often lasts longer than microblading or hair stroke brows.

However, these brows are not the best choice for those looking for a really natural result.

Powder

Like Ombre, these brows are also a shaded technique using a machine but without the soft fronts.

This is the boldest of the brow techniques and mimics a fully powdered/pencilled brow. It’s great for clients who would wear there brows fully made up every day, and heals well on all skin types.

Again, not suitable for those who want a natural result.

Lips

Semi-permanent lips are very underrated. You just don’t see them advertised like you do brows. But they should be, as the results can be AMAZING.

Rivalling lip filler, this treatment can give the illusion of more volume, correct lip shape and symmetry and also replicate the makeup you’d wear every day.

It also gives pigment to pale lips and defining the vermillion border (the liner of your lips) which often fades with age and if you’ve been a smoker.

This treatment will always be done using a machine and different shading techniques outlined below.

Lip liner

Lip liner involves a fine line being implanted around the lips to create definition. It’s used to correct a-symmetry and/or enhance clients natural shape.

It’s also, perfect for clients who are used to wearing lip liner on its own everyday.

If you want more of a full-colour lip though, this treatment isn’t for you.

Lip blush

Similar to lip line, with lip blush, a fine line is implanted around the lips to define and/or correct shape and sometimes add a little size.

The line is then blended into the natural lip which is much better for clients who don’t like the look of lip liner alone.

This technique creates a plump, 3d, shaded result without being too dramatic.

Full lip colour

The same as the other techniques, a fine line is implanted around the lips to define and or correct shape and sometimes add a little size.

This colour is then shaded over the whole lip.

It won’t create a plump, 3d look to the lip but will replicate the look of wearing full lipstick.

Eyeliner

Do you have watery eyes?

Do you get tired through the day, rub your eyes, and look at your hand only to see half your makeup on it?! Super frustrating!! That’s where semi-permanent eyeliner can come in handy.

This treatment can minic the look of your everyday liner. But it's also amazing for fair clients or those who have suffered from alopecia or other illnesses where they’ve lost lashes.

This is also a shaded technique using a machine and the most popular colours include brows and black but any colour can be used.

Eyelash Enhancement

This is the most natural eyeliner technique. Perfect for clients that want a natural result but without creating an obvious liner.

It’s usually done using black or brown pigment which is implanted between the lashes to create the illusion that they are thicker and therefore define the eyes.

But for clients used to wearing more of a heavy-liner look, this technique would probably be too natural.

Fashion liner

This technique would vary client to client and would mimic the look of your everyday eyeliner. Some would be thicker, or include a flick, depending on the results wanted and eye shape.

Some technicians offer shaded or smokey liners which look fab. they still have the definition but its softened.

A variety of colours can be used but usually browns or black are preferred.
